"There are two Mustafa Kemals. One the flesh-and-blood Mustafa Kemal who now stands before you and who will pass away. The other is you, all of you here who will go to the far corners of our land to spread the ideals which must be defended with your lives if necessary. I stand for the nation's dreams, and my life's work is to make them come true."

ATAA REMEMBERS ATATÜRK

Dear Members of the Turkish-American Community,

Today, we respectfully commemorate the 70th anniversary of the passing of our great leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic.

As Turkey faces challenges of the new century, it is now clear that the importance of Atatürk's legacy is more important than ever.

He will be remembered not merely for the military victories that brought an end to the unlawful imperialist designs over our country but also as a statesman who overcame backwardness and invigorated a new generation.

He was one of the few who asked if defeat in World War I is understood as a national trauma of debauchery and wrongdoing what of the poisons that prompted the crisis in the first place. His revolutions opened up a new era in the broader history of Turkish enlightenment - an era of progression and modernization through rationalism, laicism, pluralism, and an unyielding quest for democracy.

He remains in the hearts and minds of each one of us and continues to light our nation's way forward.

Please see the link below for a brief video clip on the ATAA Delegation's recent visit to Anıtkabir, where our members observed a minute of silence after a wreath laying ceremony and our President Nurten Ural signed the Special Notebook.
