ATAA leaders speak at the U.S. Azeris Network (USAN) Conference

On October 1st and 2nd, USAN organized its first conference "Diaspora and Energy Security in the Development of the U.S.-Azerbaijan Strategic Allied Relations" at George Washington University in Washington, DC. ATAA President Nurten Ural and ATAA President Elect Günay Evinch spoke at different panels on the second day of the conference. Among the attendees of the conference were the deputy chairman of the state commission on diaspora, Valekh Hajiyev, and Azerbaijan's permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Agshin Mekhtiyev.

As the first speaker from ATAA on the panel titled "Congressional intergovernmental and public relations - lessons for the Azerbaijani-American Diaspora", Mr. Evinch started his presentationby analyzing the situation of the Turkish and Azerbaijani Americans. Mr. Evinch's analysis stressed the fact that Turkish and Azerbaijani diasporas in the United States are two or three generations behind the Greek and Armenian diasporas. Evinch said, "We have a huge catch up in terms of writing skills, technical abilities and civic engagement. We need to increase our critical mass from 10 to 20 percent in the near future."

Evinch also pointed out the dichotomy between the executive and legislative branches of the U.S. government in terms of their treatment of Turkey. With twenty negative resolutions, Turkey's treatment by the legislative branch is quite negative whereas the executive branch usually pursues friendly policies towards Turkey. Evinch talked about the activities of ATAA in order to face such negative treatment, and added that one advantage of the Turkish and Azerbaijani Americans is the significance of their countries. Evinch concluded his speech by saying "The events of 1915 and Armenian invasion of Azerbaijan are all solvable keeping in mind the broader picture of sustainable peace and development."

Nurten Ural, who took the word in the panel titled "Azerbaijani-American Diaspora Today - Coast to Coast", talked about the vital importance for Turkish and Azerbaijani Americans to be involved into the American political system. Ural said, "It is time now to change our priorities. You give money and you vote. This is how it works in the United States." Ural continued saying that involvement into the system occurs through becoming members of the community. Ural mentioned ATAA's activities in terms of civic engagement such as traveling to nineteen American cities to educate Turkish-Americans about the U.S. political system and voting procedures.
