ATAA Condemns Terrorist Attack on US Consulate in Istanbul

July 9, 2008, Washington, DC - The Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA) strongly condemns today's terrorist attack against the US Consulate in Istanbul. According to the Associated Press, three terrorists and three police officers died in an attack on the United States Consulate this morning (11.00am GMT) in Istanbul. The attackers, who had specifically targeted the police post just outside the consulate, were killed on the spot following a shootout that left two more people, a policeman and a civilian truck driver, injured. A fourth assailant escaped from the scene, while recent news from the Turkish media reported that this person's identity has been confirmed.

The city has been the target of terrorist attacks in the past, ranging from Kurdish nationalists to religious extremists. Today's attack became the first foreign attack since the Al-Qaida bombings of November 2003. "The level of security measures already existing for US missions, personnel and interests in Turkey has been raised," reported the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in its latest press release.
Turkey and the United States are in close cooperation to stop terrorism and bring perpetrators to justice. The United States affords substantial funds and resources to protect Turkish diplomats from terrorism in the United States, particularly Armenian left-wing ASALA and Dashnak right-wing JCAG terrorist groups. As the preeminent organization representing the Turkish American community, we express our sympathies to the families of the killed police officers, the Turkish law enforcement community, and the Turkish people.
