TURKISH FESTIVAL

It’s time to embrace the Turkish Culture in our cosmopolitan city once again. Turkish Festival is coming to Houston on October 13th, 2007Jones Plaza (directions to Jones Plaza) will be alive with the sights, sounds and aromas of Turkey.  The local Turkish American community invites you to spend a delightful day and get a taste of Turkey here in your own home town without traveling 8000 miles. How?  American Turkish Association of Houston (ATA-Houston) will bring Turkey to you.  This wonderful event, which will be the 17th this year, outgrew its original location at the River Oaks Park seven years ago and has been held downtown ever since.

Come and sample authentic Turkish food and pastries while enjoying a Turkish beer or a glass of Turkish wine. If you would rather have a cup of Turkish tea or coffee instead, we will have them too.  How about dancing to the music of live local bands, watching the fabulous belly dancers and folk dancers? If you are a history buff, hear and learn about the Biblical sites of our wonderful land where civilizations lived in harmony throughout the centuries. Browse through our covered Grand Bazaar and buy jewelry, carpets, kilims, decorative accessories, hand-painted ceramic plates and tiles, copper crafts, pottery, silk scarves, pillowcases, along with books on Turkish life and travel, and CDs of traditional and popular Turkish Music. Get hands-on experience and learn about paper marble (Ebru Sanati), carpet weaving, Turkish Cooking. Come see why neither Laura Bush nor Hillary Clinton could resist buying hand carved Meerschaum Pipes or calligraphy when they were in Turkey. Better yet, buy one for yourself!

And when you’re shopped-out, relax with some Turkish tea or coffee in our recreated traditional family room (Sark Kosesi – Eastern Turkey Corner) and sit on the beautiful Turkish carpets and cushions. Turn down your coffee cups on the saucer, and let one of our ladies tell your fortune. Or perhaps you’d prefer a game of backgammon?  All this and a children’s corner too.
